Stationery Show Report

I’m fresh from the National Stationery Show and boy do I have lots to report. It was a long and jammed packed day, taking in lots of design eye candy at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC.

I started out my morning a bit late and grabbed a cab to the convention center. I got stuck in lots of rush hour traffic and spent quiet a penny to make it in time for my Wedding Trends 2008 Workshop from The Knot. I got there just in time while several people were waiting stand by for this lecture. I found a seat and shortly after it started. I got my notebook out and was ready to take as many notes as I could. Before I knew it the lecture was OVER! I’m serious this workshop was a speed lecture of 25 minutes of some lady just rattling off things from her Powerpoint presentation. My cab ride was longer then listening to her. It was interesting to hear about the upcoming wedding trends but I didn’t learn anything particular special that I couldn’t have found out on the web. I can’t believe people waited stand by for this.

Anyways, after the “workshop” I was starving and in need of caffeine. Off I went to look for food and coffee and paid through the note – $6 for a cup of Starbucks. It wasn’t that good and the food selection wasn’t the best but I wasn’t there for the food.

So onto the show…where do I begin?! There was so much to see and take in I don’t know where to begin. Thinking of it makes my head spin. Seeing all the products was very inspiring as well as creative overwhelming at the same time. Many of my favorite card, sticker and papers companies were there to display their new 2008 products.

There were definitely many popular themes and trends through many of the paper lines. I spotted a variety of bright and bold colors – greens, oranges, pinks and yellow in all combinations. And I’m happy to report everywhere I looked were prints of birds and OWLS! I loved it! Many companies use owls in there logos or brand ID and it was so fun to see how it was used so differently.

I picked up numerous business cards and catalogs to help inspire some creativity. Wherever there is free stuff I’m there, so I scored some free pens, pins and this great eco-friendly bag from the cool Ecojot. Since this show is essential for wholesalers I don’t think I should have gotten the bag without purchase but I’m glad I did – it’s GREEN!

Like I mentioned the show is mostly for wholesalers who have a business and buy products. I felt somewhat out of place when people where asking where I was from and what company I worked for. I gave away some business cards but that was mostly to get people to leave me alone and shut up. I’m not much into smoozing and talking myself up..least not today and not only on a half of $6 coffee. LOL!

I am looking forward to CHA (Craft and Hobby Association) in July since it will be with my fellow “scrappers” and hopefully I’ll fit in more. Plus John will be there so I can enjoy the experience with someone. It’s hard to enjoy it alone sometimes and hard to remember it all. But anways for the most part it was definitely worth going to see what’s out there and hopefully it will get my creative juices flowing soon. I would have taken pictures but didn’t know the etiquette and didn’t want to stand out, so I opted for the catalogs.

I’ll post some links of the cool companies I got to see during the week. I have to weed through all the cards and catalogs and make sense of them all. Like I needed to add more clutter to my apartment. LOL!

Hope you’ve had a good Monday and talk to you later,

Weekend Recap

Had a nice weekend. We went to a lovely wedding on Saturday night for a family friend and ate lots of goodies. We went tonight to the new Moe’s near us and had more yummy food. It’s dangerous having such good burritos across the street!

Excited about attending the National Stationery Show tomorrow. Should be very inspiring to see all the products and designs out there. I’m even taking a workshop on wedding trends sponsored by The Knot. I’m hoping this will help tap into the bridal market for design. We’ll see but should be inspiring nonetheless and the day off from work!

I’ll report more tomorrow after my visit! Have a good Monday.

Weekend Update

bath-product-intervention.jpg

I saw this illustration and thought it was perfect, since I ended up buying many bottles of shampoo and conditioner on EBAY! My beloved discontinued Lavendar Vanilla Shampoo and Conditioner are all over ebay. So I’m scooping them up slowly. LOL!

Anyways, besides that all I do is work! I’m working this weekend for myself and for my real job. Blows!!! I’m so tired. Alas, one day I’ll rest. Maybe in like July? Blah!

On a side note, I registered for a beginners stamping class at the local stamp shop near work. I’m excited about it. I’m feeling very crafty lately although I haven’t done much besides put together a necklace. I’ll share next time. So the class is to go over what papers and inks to use for stamping. I’m hoping to learn some things and get over my fear of stamps. They intimidate me for some reason. LOL!

Hope you are enjoying your weekend – have some fun for me =P

Type Test & Guest CT

I came across this site today and I thought it was funny. Ahhh design humor…what’s your type?

type.jpg

I was Comic Sans which is funny to me. I used to really like this type but being more of experienced designer now I have come to see it’s not that great. It’s a type that “wannabe” or “wouldbe” designers use. Funny! LOL!

I just found out today that I’m going to be a Guest CT Member for Mikkel Paige Designs. I’m very excited about this since she has some great stuff and I get to help promote her. Mikkel is on my CT and it’s nice to help support her since she has done wonderful work with my designs. I’ll start working with some of her fab products in March maybe sooner if I get some time! I’m sporting her Guest CT Blinkie on the side on the right already!

More later or tomorrow,

Super Tuesday

Been so crazy with work I don’t have time to blog BUT I did come across this funny illustration. I thought it was very appropriate for today being Super Tuesday and all.

Check out the illustrators’ other stuff too, she’s pretty funny but raunchy in some of them. We were just cracking up at a few of them now, which is what I needed after a very LONG work day which started at 7 am this morning!

I’ll try to post again soon but if I’m not around well just assuming I’m working and well more WORK! Blah! Oh and the rash is getting better. Thanks for all who asked =P

Helvetica & Mumbo Jumbo

Yesterday I had the chance to go to the International Gift Fair here in NYC which is a big trade show for wholesalers to buy products and goods to sell in their stores. I went for work and got to see many beautiful items and things on display. Saw some cool things and found some good graphic inspiration, which I have yet to use in any creative way. Feeling the funk this weekend. Plus I have a rash, hives and a swollen face today. Not sure how or why but I’m looking very puffy and red. So I lounged around all day doing nothing.

We just finished the movie, Helvetica (we started Zodiac and halfway through the DVD broke…so we don’t know the ending. I hate when that happens!) which yes is about the type! Some of my designers friends were talking about it the last time I saw them and I figured I better check it out to seem “in the know”. LOL!

According to the movie description Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.

It was a good movie and makes you realize the use of Helvetica all around you. It’s everywhere in this city and I didn’t even realize it. I didn’t really like the typeface until recently since it wasn’t very decorative or expressive. I recently have have been using it and it is quite clean although I’m partial to Bauhaus font. The movie made me think though…that fonts are a very expressive way which to convey something about ourselves. So the next time you choose a font for your design think about how it represents you, what you are trying to convey and what you are saying with your typography.

The big game is tomorrow…hope the NY Giants can pull it off. It’s going to be a good game either way. I’ll be back to the word of the day soon. I have a bunch of things lined up just need to get the words down with the graphics.

Until then…toodles,

Design Police

I came across this site and thought it was too funny not to share!

If you are a graphic designer you will totally get this and crack up. I think it’s a good idea to implement. LOL!

Johnny Loves His Starbucks

Here’s another Starbucks spot – I think my husband is in this one. LOL! My question is how is the guy going to get his top back? Still cute though. I can’t get it to link right, so if you want to see it you are going to have to check it out here.

Bear Hug

Starbucks has some cute holiday spots on tv right now and this one makes me laugh. One of my old companies did the creative on this one. Anyways, I’m sending out a big bear hug to all my readers today. I’ll share another one tomorrow.

Happy Thursday!
