Design Inspiration: Starbucks

Every season Starbucks has some great campaigns and visual designs in their stores and in print. I think they always stay very current with their design in regards to pop culture and this helps keep their brand fresh, which leads to their success. I am particularly loving their new Frappuccino campaign which is the perfect amount of whimsy and summer fun that features scribbley doodles and a scrappy collage feeling. Check out my Pinterest Starbucks Design Board showcasing many other great designs from Starbucks.

Weekend Wrap Up & New Kits

I’ve fallen behind with scrapbooking lately and Michelle Underwood has some great new kits out I wanted to tell you about. Check out Two Peas in a Bucket for her new kits, Lazy Days and Home Is Where The Heart Is.

This past weekend was our niece’s 1st dance recital, which was so cute. She did great and was really excited about the whole show. Seeing the dancers reminded me of my dance recital days which makes me want to find my photos and do a layout. I’m sure my niece would get a kick out of seeing those photos.

Flashback Fridays

I’m starting on the blog today showcasing a design of mine from the past. The design shown here is of a shirt (front/back) from college that I did for our Residence Hall. This was during the time period the Budweiser frogs were popular so that’s where the idea came from. I had to submit my design idea and luckily for me it won. I still have this shirt but it’s seen better days as you can see. I might have to retire it soon but that is going to make me so sad but maybe I can scrap it or recycle it into something cool. I still love to design t-shirts but seeing this shirt makes me realize how much I’ve grown as a designer since 1996!! Every time I out this shirt on I smile and feel proud that my design was chosen.

Wordless Wednesday

T-shirt seen in JC Penney’s – love it!

Toy Story 3

I can’t believe it’s been a year almost to the date since we saw Toy Story 3. Finally got around to documenting it – actually I wrote up the journaling part first and then that inspired my creativity for the layout. And how cute are those ribbon characters from Rachel Young?? Love them!

Have a great weekend and a wonderful Father’s Day!

Memories Live Special Feature

Last year I saw a feature on the news about a wonderful organization, Memories Live and was intrigued to find out more. Memories Live helps people with life-limiting illnesses to preserve their images, stories and wisdom by creating personalized movies to pass on to their loved ones. I thought this was a wonderful service so I reached out to Kerry Glass, the founder of Memories Live and she was so nice to answer some questions for me to share with you.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and what Memories Live is and does?
I am currently a stay at home mom who founded a non-profit called Memories Live. I have a Masters in Art Therapy from Pratt Institute and a BFA from Rutgers University. I worked as an Art Therapist at a nursing home in Riverdale, NY and left to pursue motherhood. The concept of ML was born when I learned that a woman in my community passed away at the age of 39 from lung cancer. Her children were around the same age as mine at that time, 1 and 3. It struck me that these children would never really know their mother. The purpose of Memories Live is to give individuals who have life-limiting illnesses the opportunity to create a movie about themselves to tell their stories, share their wisdom and celebrate their lives.

What is your fee for making a video?
The movies are made at no cost. I am donation supported.

What has the feedback been like from the films you’ve made?
I have only received positive feedback. Children have followed up with me to share how their parent shared a story they have never heard before. Spouses have told me how nice it is to see and hear their loved one. Clients themselves feel the process is liberating.

What are some examples of questions film participants are asked?
Where were you born? Who do you look like? Describe a perfect day? What advice to you have for your child for raising children?

Why should people think about making a video like this?
The process of creating the movies is so empowering for my clients in many ways. As they are experiencing this stage in their lives they are filled with many different emotions, and they are uplifted and energized to have the opportunity to create something for their families. They are inspired by the process to celebrate their lives in a unique way and leave valuable advice to their loved ones. They are given the opportunity to reflect on their lives, sharing stories and experiences that can be passed down to future generations.

Are people nervous about documenting their lives on camera?
I would say the first few minutes is a little nerve racking for my clients. Then they get used to me and the camera and focus on the questions.

I recently saw Memories Live featured on TV, has the exposure been positive from that feature?
Yes, the exposure was very positive. I received many emails from people who were not ill simply telling me what a wonderful service I am providing.

Do you offer video services for people who aren’t sick and want to document their lives on film? No not now, but I may in the future.
For people who aren’t sick but want to document their lives would you give them any advice for making a film? Collect stories and words of wisdom that you would like to be passed on to future generations. Relax and tell stories to the camera as if it is the first time you are telling it. Be yourself and enjoy celebrating your life!

Anything you want to add?
The movie is a celebration of ones life, I never ask about their illness.

Many thanks to Kerry Glass for taking the time to answer some of my questions about Memories Live. To find out more information about Memories Live please visit their website.

Present Laughter & Weekend Wrap Up

In honor of the Tony’s that was on last night (which was very good – go Neil Patrick Harris, Hugh Jackman and Daniel Radcliffe for the great numbers) I wanted to share a layout from the play, Present Laughter that featured the amazingly talented and dashing Victor Garber (whom I adore)!

The weekend was good – celebrated my nephew Jackson’s 7th birthday and my dear friend from college had her baby girl as well. A good weekend all around!

Design Inspiration

As a designer and a visual person I am always drawn to striking patterns – I came across this the other day and it caught my eye. Love the pops of green with the black and white silhouettes. Very simple but eye catching and powerful!

Go-Go’s Weekend

This weekend was a none stop go go type of weekend. Friday night we had the Go-Go’s concert at Irving Plaza which was a fun show. We were suppose to see them last year but one of the members hurt themselves and it was postponed. I’ve been a big fan of them since high school so I definitely had to check out their final tour and despite having people around us who wanted to talk throughout the concert we had a good time. I’m glad we got a chance to see them when we did because the next 2 shows we cancelled because Belinda Carlisle was under doctors orders to rest her voice. So I guess our timing finally worked out this year! Also it was very cool to hear The Go-Go’s cover Belinda’s solo song, Mad About You – something they never do.

And on Saturday night we went to see The Hangover 2, which was funny and today we enjoyed a nice picnic in Prospect Park with a friend and some new ones we meet. All in all a busy but fun weekend was had! How was your weekend?
